Over 200,000 new members have joined our union under the leadership of Organization Director, Anna Smith. Working alongside local and state leaders she has and continues to actively participate in the vital work of organizing those who have yet to join the fight to improve our wages and working conditions.

Serving as your Organization Director since 2013, she has brought her unique skills and energy to create new and exciting organizing materials, as well as resources that are both useful and readily available for use by local and state leaders. Anna has created materials to aid organizing efforts at every level of our union. She has developed reports so leaders can better serve their membership and continues to streamline the process for those joining the APWU. She spearheaded the program for our non-members to join the APWU online, a program which has resulted in thousands of new members! Her dedication and commitment to membership has never and will never waver.

Anna Smith has led national campaigns that is at the forefront of internal organizing. Most recently, in 2024, over the course of 2 months, we signed up over 8000 new members as a result of an all-intense National Organizing Drive. Having partnered with instructors from the AFL-CIO and local leaders we have pooled together unique talents to create one of the most in-depth courses on internal organizing in the nation. These training courses are designed to give new and experienced organizers in our union the tools and techniques they need to increase our membership.

The work is not done though. Continuing to pursue programs, allocate funds, and invest in our organizing efforts is essential for sustained progress and success. Anna will work endlessly to ensure that challenges are met with continued innovative solutions and the organizing momentum we have achieved is maintained.

Prior to being your National Organization Director, Anna began her postal employment in 1996.  She has served the union at the local level as Organizing Director, Editor, Local Steward, and Associate Office Director for multiple terms. At the state level she served the membership as Editor, District Representative and 3 terms as State President.

Unions built the middle class, and I will stand and fight against any attempts to strip us of the fundamental right to organize and unionize.
